📖 In English

Maybe you grew up hearing Urdu at home but never quite spoke it. Maybe your grandparents speak it and you only catch every other word. If Urdu feels just out of reach, this is for you.

So many people tell me the same thing: "I understand a little, but I freeze when I try to speak." That feeling is not a sign that you are bad at languages. It is simply what happens when a language lives in your ears but not yet on your tongue. The good news is that the foundation is already there.

Language is more than words

When you speak even a little Urdu with an elder, something shifts. A grandmother's face softens. A conversation that used to happen through someone else now happens directly, between the two of you. You are not just exchanging information. You are saying, "your world matters to me, and I want to be part of it."

You are not starting from zero

Heritage learners have a quiet advantage. Your ear is already tuned to the sounds and the rhythm. You often know more words than you think. What you need is not years of study but a little structure and a safe place to practise without feeling judged.

It is never too late

I have taught teenagers reconnecting with grandparents, adults learning before a wedding, and people in their sixties finally giving themselves permission to try. Every one of them worried they had left it too long. Not one of them was right.

🗣️ Roman Urdu mein

Shayad aap ghar mein Urdu suntay huay baray huay lekin kabhi theek se bol nahin paaye. Shayad aap kay daada daadi ya naana naani Urdu boltay hain aur aap ko sirf aadhi baat samajh aati hay. Agar Urdu thori door lagti hay, to yeh aap kay liye hay.

Bohat se log mujhe yehi kehtay hain: "main thora samajh leta hoo'n, lekin bolnay ki koshish karoon to ruk jaata hoo'n." Yeh ehsaas is baat ki nishaani nahin kay aap zabaanon mein achchay nahin. Yeh sirf tab hota hay jab zabaan aap kay kaanon mein to hay lekin abhi zabaan par nahin. Achchi baat yeh hay kay buniyaad pehle se mojood hay.

Zabaan sirf alfaaz nahin

Jab aap kisi baray kay saath thori si bhi Urdu boltay hain, to kuch badal jaata hay. Naani ka chehra naram ho jaata hay. Woh baat jo pehle kisi aur kay zariye hoti thi, ab seedha aap dono kay darmiyaan hoti hay. Aap sirf maloomaat ka tabaadla nahin kar rahay. Aap keh rahay hain, "aap ki dunya mere liye ahem hay, aur main is ka hissa banna chahta hoo'n."

In mein se aik bhi theek nahin tha.

Your roots are worth reaching for.
