There's a specific ache many of us carry: your grandparents speak Urdu, you reply in English, and you can feel a little distance where there should be warmth. The beautiful thing is that it takes surprisingly few phrases to close that gap. Here are the ones that matter most — say them out loud, and watch their face light up.
What to call them
On your dad's side: daada دادا (grandfather) and daadi دادی (grandmother). On your mum's side: naana نانا (grandfather) and naani نانی (grandmother).
Start with respect (always use "aap")
With elders you always use the respectful aap آپ, never the casual "tum." It signals love and respect in one small word.
• Assalam-o-Alaikum السلام علیکم — hello (the perfect opener)
• Aap kaisay hain? آپ کیسے ہیں؟ — how are you?
• Aap ki tabiyat kaisi hay? آپ کی طبیعت کیسی ہے؟ — how is your health?
The phrases that melt hearts
• Mujhe aap se bohat pyaar hai مجھے آپ سے بہت پیار ہے — I love you very much
• Aap ne khaana khaaya? آپ نے کھانا کھایا؟ — have you eaten? (the ultimate desi "I care about you")
• Mujhe aap ki yaad aati hay مجھے آپ کی یاد آتی ہے — I miss you
• Aap ki dua chahiye آپ کی دعا چاہیے — I want your prayers/blessings
Keep the conversation going
• Mujhe apni kahani sunaayein مجھے اپنی کہانی سنائیں — tell me your story
• Yeh Urdu mein kya kehtay hain? یہ اردو میں کیا کہتے ہیں؟ — how do you say this in Urdu?
That last one is magic: it turns your grandparent into your teacher, and there is no bond quite like it.
You don't need to be perfect
Your grandmother will not grade your grammar. She will hear her language in your mouth and feel loved. Broken Urdu said with love beats perfect Urdu never spoken. Bohat se logon kay dil mein aik khaas kasak hoti hay: daadi naani Urdu bolti hain, aap English mein jawab detay hain. Chand jumlay yeh faasla mita detay hain.
Buzurgon kay saath hamesha aap istemaal karein. Assalam-o-Alaikum, Aap kaisay hain?, Aap ne khaana khaaya?, Mujhe aap se bohat pyaar hai, Mujhe aap ki yaad aati hay. Perfect honay ki zaroorat nahin — pyaar se kaha hua toota phoota Urdu bhi dil jeet leta hay.
Say "I love you" to them in their language.
